November 3, 2022Assortment planning is the process of deciding which products a brand will offer for a given season, channel, or market — balancing range, depth, pricing, and margin against demand and financial targets.
Line planning is building and structuring a product line for a season — defining styles, colorways, options, and price points, and how they ladder up to the assortment and financial plan — before designs and orders are finalized.
Sell-in is presenting a seasonal assortment to wholesale buyers and retail partners and converting it into orders ahead of the season. It is distinct from sell-through, which is selling to the end consumer.
A digital catalog is an online, always-current presentation of a brand’s assortment used for merchandising and B2B sell-in — replacing static PDFs and linesheets with live product data, imagery, and pricing.
In fashion and retail, go-to-market (GTM) covers everything between creating a product and getting it in front of buyers and consumers — assortment and line planning, digital catalogs, campaigns, sell-in, and order management.
